Morgan:  Welcome to Pickleball Trivia. We’ve got two contestants on the line, ready to do battle. I’ve got Charity Schneider from Spokane, Washington, and Chris Kay, from Calgary, Albert on the line.

Contestant #1 has the serve and will be asked a Pickleball-related question. If they answer correctly, they will keep the serve and answer more questions. If they get their question wrong, unfortunately, contestant #2 will have a chance to steal the point and the serve. You keep scoring points to finish the game. The first player to get to five points wins the Selkirk gift voucher.

    Charity, are you ready?

    Charity:  I am.

Morgan:  Alright. Tell us a little bit about yourself, Charity.

Charity:  I am from Spokane, Washington. I’m married and I have an 11-year-old son, Caleb. I play tennis and Pickleball.

Morgan:  Okay, multi-talented – that’s going to serve you well here.

Chris, how are you, mate? What’s new in your world?

Chris:  Hey, I’m doing great! Actually got a couple of pretty exciting things going on. One, my wife and I just found out that we are expecting twins this summer, so…

    Morgan:  Oh my god!

    Charity:  Congratulations!
Chris:  So life is about to change in a big way. We’re pretty excited.

    Morgan:  Congratulations!

    Chris:  Thank you!

Morgan:  Hopefully that Selkirk gift voucher can be put towards some adorable, small paddles.

Chris:  Yeah, should be able to get at least one.

Morgan:  (chuckles…) Alright, are you ready to get your thinking caps on?

    Charity:  Yes.

    Chris:  Let’s go!

Morgan:  Question #1 is for contestant #1, Charity.

    Charity:  Ready.

Morgan:  In feet, what are the dimensions of a service box?

    Chris:  20 feet?

Morgan:  20 feet by… So there are two dimensions, length and width.

    Charity:  Oh, sorry.

    Morgan:  That’s okay.

Charity:  20 feet by 8 feet.

Morgan:  Interesting… Alright, I have not played on a court that size yet but maybe that will become the new dimensions of the service box. Unfortunately, Charity, that is not quite correct, so Chris is going to get a chance to steal the point.

Chris, what are the dimensions of a service box?

Chris:  I am going to go with 10 feet wide by 15 feet deep, 10 x 15.

Morgan:  Congratulations, 10 x 15 is the correct answer.

    Chris:  Alright, early lead!

Morgan:  Yeah. Okay, so you have the serve and a chance to score more points.

According to the 2019 Pickleball participant report, there are how many players in the US? A. 2.7 million? B. 3.1 million? Or C. 3.3 million?

Chris:  Let’s go with the bigger number, C. 3.3 million.

    Morgan:  Congratulations! That is correct.

    Chris:  Alright!

Morgan:  You’re cooking with gas here. It’s very good!

Okay, moving on, question #3: Of the three men that are said to have been the inventors of the game, which one of them was a congressman?

Chris:  That was Joel Prichard, I believe was a congressman.

Morgan:  Oh my… Chris, how do you know these things? I didn’t know these things, I had to look them up.

Chris:  Oh, I’m a Pickleball nerd – a total nerd.

Morgan:  Oh, okay – alright, alright.

Okay, Chris, what is my middle name?

Chris:  Oh Jesus! Where can I look that up? I don’t want to offend you. How about Douglas? That sounds like a funny middle name.

Morgan:  No, unfortunately, not. My middle name is not Douglas. My middle name is actually Morgan.

    Chris:  Oh, cool!

Morgan:  I thought there was a chance you’re going to get that one.

    Chris:  Trick question.

Morgan:  A little bit, little bit. My first name is Robert. Who knew? I didn’t find out until I was about 10.

    Chris:  Yeah. (laughs…)

Morgan:  I thought it was a little odd but it is what it is.

Okay, that means Charity, you have a chance to score some points here.

    Charity:  Alright.

    Morgan:  Alright! Are you ready?

    Charity:  I’m ready.

Morgan:  What year was the first US Open Championships?

    Charity:  2016.

    Morgan:  That is correct.

    Charity:  Yes!

Morgan:  2016 – you can hear the excitement in her voice. Very good!

    Charity:  (laughs…)

Morgan:  In a typical game to 11, each side is allowed two timeouts. How many timeouts are allowed in a game to 15?

    Charity:  Two.

Morgan:  That is correct. I thought I might stump you with that one.

Charity:  I thought you were going to stump me on that one.

Morgan:  But you pulled through. I’m proud of you – we’re all proud of you.

Okay, moving on. Question #3: The Nasty Nelson is named after which player?
    Charity:  Is it Zane?

Morgan:  He has been very good at it in recent times. But it is not Zane. That means Chris, you have a chance to answer correctly, steal the point and the serve. Any ideas?
Chris:  Yeah, I got to go with Timothy Nelson.

Morgan:  Timothy Nelson, that is correct. The man, the myth, the legend – Timothy Nelson.

So, as it stands, Chris, you have 4 points. Charity, you have 2. Let’s see if Chris can finish off the game here.

    Chris:  Here we go.

Morgan:  Who took the gold medal in the Men’s Senior Pro in the 2019 US Open?

Chris:  Oh, 2019 was an upset. Scott Moore lost to Paul Olin?

Morgan:  Okay, this is the Pro Doubles.

Chris:  Oh, Doubles – so Senior Men’s Doubles. Gold medal was Scott Moore and his partner.

Morgan:  That would have been a safe bet. But unfortunately, that’s incorrect.

    Chris:  (laughs…) Okay.

Morgan:  That means Charity, you have a chance to steal that point and keep the serve.

The gold medal in the Men’s Senior Pro Doubles? I can hear you typing…

Charity:  That’s not me. Can I get a timeout?

Morgan:  Oh, okay – a timeout? Yes, I can give you one hint. Your hint is that one of the players is very new to the senior division, incredibly new.

Charity:  Was one of them Dave [Weinchuck].

Morgan:  Well, I assume you mean Dave Weinbach?
Charity:  Oh, sorry – Weinbach. Yes, Dave Weinbach.

Morgan:  Yes. He didn’t do it alone, though. Unfortunately, we do need the name of the other player.

Charity:  It’s not Deakin, was it?

Morgan:  Not, it’s not Deakin. They have played together but not in that particular event.

    Charity:  Oh… (sighs…)

    Morgan:  It’s okay.

Chris:  Deakin looks 50 but he’s not quite yet, right?

Morgan:  Yes, he’s 46. We wouldn’t tell him you said that, don’t worry.

    Charity:  (laughs…)

Morgan:  It was Dave Weinbach and Barry Waddell.

    Chris:  That’s a tough one.

Morgan:  That is a tough one. It means Chris, you keep the serve and we’ll move on.

The game was invented in 1965. However, when was the first permanent court built?

Chris:  I don’t think a timeout is going to help me much here, so…

    Morgan:  I don’t think so.

Chris:  I’m going to be randomly picking a number. I’m going to go with 1977.

Morgan:  That, unfortunately, is incorrect, my man. Really close, really close but not that close.

    Chris:  Alright.

Morgan:  Charity, for the steal and the serve. When was the first permanent court built?

    Charity:  1983?

Morgan:  That, unfortunately, is incorrect as well. I had such high hopes. It was 1967.

    Chris:  Oh, straight away!

Morgan:  Yeah, yeah a couple of years – not long.

Alright, Chris, this means you do keep the serve and have a chance to close out the game.

In 2019, one woman was inducted into the Pickleball Hall of Fame. Who was it?

Chris:  I was at this presentation, and it was Jennifer Lucore.

Morgan:  Jennifer Lucore, for the win!

    Chris:  There we go.

Morgan:  Congratulations, Chris Kay from Calgary, Alberta! You are today’s champion!

    Charity:  Congratulations!

Chris:  Alright! Thanks, guys! Thanks, Charity!

Morgan:  Well done. It turns out she was very charitable for you today. You know I had to do that pun – it’s too easy.

Charity, did you have fun anyway?

    Charity:  Yes, definitely!

Morgan:  Oh, good – happy to hear it. Chris, what are you going to spend your millions on? Probably the new baby?

Chris:  I got to get one of those Riley’s paddles for sure

    Morgan:  Yes, that’s true.

    Chris:  Yup, a no-brainer.

Morgan:  No-brainer, fantastic! Well, thank you both kindly for being on the show. This has been another episode of Pickleball Trivia. We will see you again soon, guys.

    Charity:  Thank you!
    Chris:  Thanks so much, everybody!
